Why We Started BillBuster: Fighting Back Against High Utility Bills

We all feel it — the creeping rise in electricity and gas bills, month after month. Prices fluctuate, peak-hour surcharges catch us off guard, and most people have no visibility into where their energy goes or how to reduce costs without sacrificing comfort. We started BillBuster because we were tired of this.

The Problem We Faced Ourselves

Like many others, we installed solar panels, batteries, and smart home devices hoping to take control of our energy usage. But we quickly realized that hardware alone isn’t enough. The tools available for managing energy — especially for homes with hybrid systems — are scattered, hard to use, and often too technical for everyday users.

Even those who use powerful tools like Home Assistant struggle to automate energy decisions effectively:

  • Should I charge the battery now or later?
  • Is it worth discharging during this evening’s peak tariff?
  • Can I shift some of my loads to off-peak hours?

These are not easy questions — and even harder to automate reliably.

The Vision Behind BillBuster

BillBuster was born out of the idea that your smart home should actually be smart — not just full of gadgets. We wanted a system that understands electricity pricing, forecasts your consumption, and makes optimal decisions for you. That system should not only lower your bill — it should show you how much you’re saving.

We built BillBuster as a two-part solution:

  1. A cloud portal

that does the heavy lifting: calculating optimal strategies, visualizing energy flow, and serving as a secure, mobile-friendly dashboard.
  2. A Home Assistant plugin

that runs locally and securely, executing decisions with full transparency and control.

What Makes BillBuster Different

We designed BillBuster to be smart, open, and helpful:

  • Smart Battery Optimization

It uses day-ahead energy prices and consumption prediction to optimize battery behavior.

  • EV Charging Integration

It integrates with evcc.io for optimized EV charging.

  • Deferred Load Support

It supports deferred loads — like water heaters and dishwashers — that can wait for cheaper energy.

  • Peak Load Management

It helps users lower their connection power by flattening peak loads.

  • Home Assistant Integration

And unlike many energy tools, it’s fully integrated with Home Assistant, the most powerful open-source home automation platform.

But maybe most importantly — it’s built for you. Not utility companies. Not equipment manufacturers. You, the homeowner who wants to reduce waste and save money without constantly fiddling with schedules and spreadsheets.

The Future of Smarter Energy Use

We’re starting with electricity, but our roadmap includes gas and heating cost optimization, integration with more inverters and meters, and deeper insights for both users and grid operators.
BillBuster isn’t just about automation — it’s about giving you clarity, control, and confidence in how you use energy.
